Iverrian is a solo high/dark fantasy comic book project made by author/illustrator Luka Brico, set in the fictional world of Athoria and the adjacent nightmare realm. Iverrian is currently manifesting itself through the main comic Iverrian - Curse of the Crown, and short-form stories that are called “card comics”
Tribal warfare, cultists, strange creatures emerging from nightmares, war-maidens, haunted ruins of a forgotten past and black castles that disrupt a cold northern landscape with their jagged edges. Iverrian’s main purpose is to make you go “hell-yeah” as you excitedly flip from one page to another.
As mentioned before, I’m here for the eldritch entities, hauntings, black castles and cultists. I’m not here to make good use of the mature tag or to explore the bottomless depravities of the human condition.
While a little bit of shock value can be good for the story, we’re not here to dwell on it, make you visibly cringe or put the book down because it filled you with dread.
The rule of cool is here to satisfy that teenage spark most of us here still have within us, but we’re adults now and flashing a couple of cool pictures simply can’t carry a story anymore.
We seek characters that we can read into, that speak to our own psyche and that are intertwined with the stories of others in interesting ways.
In other words, character depth is what keeps us invested in the story and it’s something I’m always mindful of when working on Iverrian.
Iverrian is aiming to become a large comic-book franchise filled with stories from all over Athoria and the nightmare realm, giving context to the history, cultures and nature of these worlds.
Iverrian: Curse of the Crown’s story is already written down in short notes, I know (roughly) how, when and where it ends and (depending on the page count) the current aim is to have 12 to 13 chapters altogether. Once that’s done we’re moving to another graphic novel featuring some new (and some old) characters in a familiar world.
Card comics will continue to delve into short stories that build upon these 2 worlds with both new and familiar characters and places.
